Architecting Next.js Applications in a Monorepo

The Challenge of Scaling Frontend Teams

Building scalable web applications requires a solid foundation. As our products grow, managing dependencies and keeping the UI consistent becomes a significant challenge. Recently, our engineering team transitioned to a unified monorepo architecture to manage our core platforms seamlessly.

Our Architecture: Polaris & DevStudio

Our primary applications, Polaris and DevStudio, are both built using Next.js 15. This allows us to fully leverage React Server Components (RSC) and advanced caching strategies for optimal performance.

Instead of duplicating code, we extracted our complex dashboards and UI elements into shared React packages. This means:

  • Single Source of Truth: Shared TypeScript types and validators ensure end-to-end safety.
  • Consistent UI: A shared UI package guarantees that our Swiss Design principles are strictly adhered to across all applications.
  • Faster Deployments: Independent builds and unified testing.

By wrapping these web apps with tools like Capacitor for mobile distribution, and integrating a Headless CMS for dynamic content, we've created a future-proof stack that empowers both our developers and our marketing team.
